Much the same as youthful rebels of every generation look to rebel uniformly against the previous generation. People have now set out to rebel away from the world with its strong push towards equality and the technology which effectively shrinks the planet from weeks of travel to sheer seconds. The once blacks and whites of eastern vs western culture, women vs men, age, perhaps contreversially of race against race are shifting into murky grays and people find their identities not nearly as special as they once were. While nobody can deny it is wrong to discriminate on the grounds of red hair or brown, black skin or white it was the way of things for a very very long time.
People are socially geared to be discriminated against. People hate the very thought of discrimination. They get bees in their bonnets and those of short fuse may explode in disgust at the mildest of discriminatory remarks. Yet the reason they were like that, the very reason they were getting discriminated against, was the sense of belonging to something. Some part of people doesn't expect people to understand, doesn't WANT other people to understand. From early in life, even poorly treated children, are against the idea that anybody else in the world would understand why they are going through. Other people aren't them they can't get it. If they get it then what the individual is feeling, what their going through, can't be as uniquely bad as they feel it to be. For many that's not good.
People don't want to have to share histories, ideals, hobbies or even favourite colours or foods with people they don't know or dislike. People they don't think are like them CAN'T be like them. Otherwise what have they got that's theirs? So the move towards equality to the disapproval or discrimination is causing a rise in people out to get the point across. People yelling at the world, 'I AM DIFFERENT! Don't treat me like everybody else!'. People have been covertly striped of their identity through the work of equality.
The wrong thing about the worlds current equality goals is it is almost communist in wanting to treat people equally rather than treating people differently based on who they are. For many people they cling to the fact that their nationality still means something. However in countries like Australia while new comers migrating into their nation hold close many of their social things from home Australians of 4 and 5 generations are saying they can't stake a claim on their heritage. Why else are Australians who can trace themselve back to convicts calling themselves of English decent rather than being able to say... yeah I'm an Australian born and bred proudly.
So for many even nationality has become something lost in the swirl of gray equality. Blogs and other technologies grouping people from across the planet into minority groups so different to the classics of old will continue to be popular. People need to have people they can connect to on a level which isn't the same as the people of the world they see as different to themselves. Discrimination will continue to exist because of its essential connection to humanity and individuality. The negative connotations need to be striped as much as possible from the act of seperation between people for differences be they social, physical, cultural or idealistic. Not because people should be judged for their differences... but because they shouldn't be judged for wanting to be with people who share those similarites...
